Meet The Maker: Happy Moose Juice Founders Phoebe and Ryan

Interview by Arno Holschuh.

Give us the basics: What is Happy Moose Juice all about?
Happy Moose Juice is a San Francisco-based juice company serving up nutritionally dense, cold-pressed fruit & vegetable juices and almond milks.  While the industrial food chain is set up to push businesses to alter real, fresh, and natural ingredients via methods of pasteurization, over-processing and preserving; Happy Moose Juice's mission is to become the first raw, cold-pressed juice brand to achieve national scale and distribution, while remaining committed to providing the absolute best thing we know how to make.

How did you get started in the juice business?
We came here from our homelands of Indiana (Phoebe) and North Carolina (Ryan) in pursuit of the diverse, eclectic lifestyle that San Francisco has given its visitors and inhabitants since the gold rush. We moved into one of the old captain's mansions of the presidio with 8 other young, forward-thinking housemates. The culture of the house was creative and inspiring, where we believed we could create anything we were passionate about.  We both came from blue-collar backgrounds and were chasing the dream of having our own food business in the incubator-type environment of San Francisco.

What makes Happy Moose Juice different from the other juice companies?
The industrial food chain is set up to push businesses to alter real, fresh, and natural ingredients via methods of pasteurization, over-processing and preserving; Happy Moose Juice's mission is to become the first raw, cold-pressed juice brand to achieve national scale and distribution, while remaining committed to providing the absolute best thing we know how to make. We're also the only ones trying to parlay a hip hop career with a starting juice company. And the proof is in the recipe names.

Yeah, that watermelon/cucumber/mint combo Refresh and So Clean is a particular favorite. Juice is kind of a craze right now -- how does it feel to be riding a wave of popularity?
Feels like hard work but an abundance of milliseconds of joy. We are dedicating ourselves to finding the best of these, extracting what’s good, and bottling it up to share with you

Is there a juice you like but do not sell because you think it’s too out there for the public?
Flowering artichokes.

I would try that. Speaking of exotic juices, coffee is an extract of a fruit seed -- are there any juices made that way?
We juice lots of seeds with the fruit that we press. So that might count, but I think coffee is different because it's more obsessive.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Anyway, let’s talk about coffee some more! What’s been the best cup of coffee you’ve ever had?
It would have been a homemade cup of something real black and diesel after living abroad 3 years ago and not having access to a classic American drip for the duration of that time.

Who are your heros?
My best friend James, my mom, and my first dog.
